Clancy Newman

Clancy Newman

Clancy Newman 1000 733 Welcome to Kingston Chamber Music Festival | Kingston Chamber Music Festival

We’re looking forward to our summer festival! Over the next few weeks, we’ll introduce each artist performing in our 36th season. Cellist Clancy Newman will play on July 24th, 26th, 28th, and 30th, as well as August 4th.

Acclaimed for being “entirely dazzling” (San Francisco Chronicle), “in a class of his own” (Philadelphia Inquirer), and having “effortless mastery” (San Diego Union Tribune), Clancy Newman travels the world as an award-winning cellist, composer, producer, writer, and teacher.

He and KCMF Artistic Director Natalie Zhu met in 1998 and have collaborated often since then – on and off KCMF stages. This summer, concert goers can look forward to hearing the duo perform Frédéric Chopin’s Cello Sonata in G minor. Throughout the rest of the festival, Newman will play a range of other works – from Franz Schubert’s String Quintet in C Major (notable for its use of two cellos rather than two violas) to Italian composer Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s “evocative and quirky” Quintet for Guitar and String Quartet.

Get to know Clancy!

Q. How do you handle nerves before performing?
A. I try to stay light-hearted and laugh at the absurdity of what it is I do: I rub a stick with horse hair across metal strings (glorified rubber bands) to make sound… and people listen!

What’s at the top of your bucket list?
I would love to climb Mount Rainier someday.

What do you always bring with you when you travel?

Ear plugs. You never know when you’re going to need them.

What are the top three songs on your personal playlist?
I’m old-fashioned, I’m not such a “playlist” type of person — I still like to listen to whole albums! Nonetheless, three of my favorite songs these days are “Off He Goes” by Pearl Jam, “Us and Them” by Pink Floyd, and “Since I’ve Been Loving You” by Led Zeppelin.

Favorite quote/personal life motto:
Never procrastinate.

What is a little known fact about you?
I played in a rock band in college.

Best advice you have ever received:
“Drive on the left” when I pulled out of a gas station on the wrong side of the road in Australia, into oncoming traffic.

What’s your favorite type of food?
Growing up, I always said that pizza was my favorite food. Now, I think it might be soup dumplings.

What piece of music never fails to move you?
Beethoven Opus 132 “Hymn to Thanksgiving”. I once was listening to it in the car on a long drive, and I had to pull over on the interstate because I was so moved.
