Joel Link

Joel Link 1024 907 Welcome to Kingston Chamber Music Festival | Kingston Chamber Music Festival

We’re looking forward to our summer festival! Over the next few weeks, we’ll introduce each artist performing in our 36th season. Violinist Joel Link will play on August 2nd and 4th.

Link has been a violinist with the Dover Quartet, named one of the greatest string quartets of the past 100 years by BBC Music Magazine, since it was formed in 2008. On August 2nd, they will return to Kingston to give the world-premiere performance of Jerod Impichcha̱achaaha’ Tate’s Woodland Songs and classical orchestration of Pura Fé Rattle Songs. Included on this program is Jessie Montgomery’s Strum and Antonín Dvořák’s Quartet in F Major – one of the most beloved string quartets in chamber music – exemplifying the Dover Quartet’s inimitable style as an ensemble.

On August 4th, the Dover Quartet will be joined by cellist Clancy Newman for Franz Schubert’s String Quintet in C Major, D.956. Link will also join Newman and pianist Natalie Zhu for Felix Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio in D minor, Op.49. Of that piece, Dr. James Wells writes that Mendelssohn offers a “complex melodic development and harmonically varied expressions between violin, cello and the piano. Robert Schumann proclaimed it ‘the master trio of the age.’ It may be an effortless piece for the listener, but for the performers, Mendelssohn requires agility, sensitivity and endurance!”

Get to know Joel!

Q. How do you handle nerves before performing?
A. I like to do some deep breathing exercises, as well as touch on the most challenging passages I will be playing. I think about relaxing my body and eliminating as much tension as possible so I can feel free and loose in performance. Mentally, I like to reflect on the preparation I’ve done, and I like to remind myself that I’ve already done the work. Now it’s time to enjoy and share my love for music and tell a great story.

What’s at the top of your bucket list?
I’d love to watch “El Clásico” in either Barcelona or Madrid! I’m a huge Real Madrid fan!

What do you always bring with you when you travel?
I can’t leave the house without lip balm!

What are the top three songs on your playlist?
I’m not sure I have particular songs at the top of my playlist, but these days I’d say that I listen to a staggering amount of Billie Holiday! I’m also listening to a lot of Ella Fitzgerald, as well as Art Tatum and Oscar Peterson!

Personal life motto:
Don’t compare yourself to who someone else is today. Compare yourself to who you were yesterday.

What is a little known fact about you?
I make the world’s best chocolate chip walnut cookies.

Best advice you have ever received:
Trust and fall in love with your process. There is no substitute for time.

What would you do if you weren’t a musician?
I could have seen myself go into either chemistry or social psychology!

What’s your favorite food?
These days I’m really into fried chicken!
