Schools Outreach Program

An integral part of the Kingston Chamber Music Festival is its annual Schools Outreach Program. Started in 1991 by violinist and festival founder David Kim, the program sends classical musicians to 12 to 15 elementary schools during a one-week period every winter, sometimes culminating in a free concert at the end of the week. The children hear much more than beautiful music as the artists talk about their careers, their instruments and the music itself and field a host of questions from their young audiences. An animated and outgoing performer, Kim often did this program by himself, or with a piano accompanist, and is now known by a whole generation of young people in southern Rhode Island. In recent years, the festival has also sent such diverse artists as an accordionist, a percussionist, and a string ensemble to tour the schools.

In 2012, the schools outreach will be performed by violinist Paul Arnold of the Phildelphia Orchestra and violist Jessica Chang, a student at the Curtis Institute, the week of March 26-30.

Ensemble-in-residence

Since 2001, the Kingston Chamber Music Festival has routinely sent a professional ensemble into the Rhode Island community during the summer festival in order to spread the joy of chamber music.  They typically visit summer camps, youth groups, senior centers, or hospitals presenting a free mini-concert/discussion.  Hundreds of Rhode Islanders, young and old, have been able to appreciate first-class classical music and become potential new audience members.

In 2012, the ensemble-in-residence will be the Dolce Suono Trio.
